An Ideogram brand moment

00Introduction

Most people apply to a role.
I'm trying to make a turn.

Twenty years in, I'm leaving the safe title to be a company's first brand hire, the most exposed work there is, and the only work I want.

So I didn't treat this as a test. I treated it as the first thing I'd ship if you hired me.

What follows is me, already in the role, thinking about Custom Models the way I'd think about it on a Tuesday.

The Stories

(and the pains behind it)
04 / 04
01
The Brief
Thursday afternoon. 60 campaign assets due Monday. The client hired your studio because the work looks like yours, they could have hired anyone.
02
The Wall
You've shipped 8. You look at the wall. The 8 feel like you. The other 52 are technically possible by Monday, but they'll feel like a competent stranger working in your general direction.
03
The Choice
You start choosing. Which assets get your hand? Which get the version where you compromise on the part that's actually yours? That choice is the whole problem.
04
Custom Models
Exists so you don't have to make it. Train it on the 8. Generate 52 that read as yours. Ship all 60.

The Stories

(and the pains behind it)
04 / 04
01
The win
Friday morning. The studio just landed a brand refresh: three months, six channels, hundreds of touchpoints. The pitch won the room because the work looks like yours.
02
The team
Monday. There are three of you. You've taken lead, but the production load falls on two juniors. They're great. They've been with you for two years. They still can't quite hit your hand.
03
The Bottleneck
By Wednesday, the batch reads as a careful impression of the studio. You spend the rest of the week touching every piece. You won the pitch, and just paid for it again.
04
Custom Models
Trains on the hand. Shares it with the team. Every junior generates from the same foundation you taught the model. The work reads as yours because it was made from your work. Now the hand belongs to the studio. Not just to you.
01The manifesto

Every studio has a hand.

A hand makes the work. The work makes the studio. The work doesn't have time to wait for the hand to make every piece.

Custom Models are how the hand scales. Train one on the work you've already made. Then make new work that's still unmistakably yours.

Make a thousand things.
Make them yours.
